Shopping for drywall screws but not quite sure what you need? Thanks to the expert advice available here at Ace Fixings, we’ll help you find screws for any job. To help you find the right drywall screws, here’s everything you need to know before heading to checkout:
What are drywall screws?
Drywall screws are used for installing drywall onto wood or metal framing. They have a deeper thread than regular screw threads to ensure they lodge strongly within the drywall and reduce the risk of dislodging.
Drywall screws are manufactured from case-hardened steel and are mainly coated in zinc or phosphate. These materials are corrosion resistant and are easier to draw in as the shanks are slippery. Drywall screws are available in various colours but mainly come in black due to the phosphate finish on the steel.
What is the difference between drywall screws and normal screws?
The main difference between drywall screws and regular screws is down to the thread. Drywall screws are manufactured with a deeper thread compared to regular screws to prevent them from dislodging from the drywall.
Drywall screws are typically made of steel, providing a hardened, brittle nail that holds the risk of snapping if screwed into hardwood. Wood screws differ as they are manufactured using a combination of materials, including steel and softer metal. These materials make wood screws better for woodworking projects as they are thicker and more snap-resistant.
Drywall screw heads typically come in a bulge or flat head, compared to wood screw heads that come in various head styles. If you are working with wood, we recommend looking at our full range of wood screws.
Types of drywall screws on sale
There are two common types of drywall screws; W-type and S-type.
W-type drywall screws are longer and thinner in design, making them a better solution for drilling into wood over metal. An S-type drywall screw is designed with a fine thread and sharp point, making penetration into the drywall much easier. S-type drywall screws are great for attaching onto metal.
The thickness of drywall panels you are working with will determine the type of drywall screw you should use. W-type screws are preferred for projects where the wood has a depth of 0.63 inches, while s-type screws are preferred for a depth of 0.38 inches.
